SBS Boston Recap 🌱
SBS-Boston was hosted on April 13, 2023 at the tail-end of the MIT Energy Conference and sought to bring together experts in sustainability, Web3, and ReFi to learn from another and collaborate on solutions for addressing the most pressing problems of today. With over 30+ speakers and 700+ virtual and in-person attendees, we are proud to say that SBS-Boston was a huge success!
Some of the most prominent topics covered included highlighting the real-world applications and utility of blockchain technology on people and planet, how open and decentralized data enables a higher degree of transparency for things like carbon offsets and supply chain traceability, and how we can build the next generation of the internet to be more aligned with the natural world. Sustainable Blockchain Hackathon 🛠️
Leading up to SBS-Boston was a two-stage hackathon with over 400+ participants that aimed to connect the ReFi community with students interested in sustainability and web3. We were specifically looking for the best use of Filecoin and CO2.Storage for environmentally focused projects with additional bounties from our sponsors at The HBAR Foundation, Climate Collective, and Hyphen. We received a total of 38 submissions, gave out over $40,000 in bounties, and are excited to highlight some of the winners!
Our first place winner was OpenTrees, a decentralized storage solution for structured tree data and encourages standardization and reduced fragmentation of data schemas for trees that built on top of Filecoin Green’s CO2.Storage. Second place went to Chevtrox, a project focused on using Web3 technologies for enhancing digital monitoring, reporting, and verification processes for carbon credits. The third place prize went to Cargo Credits, a decentralized solution for incentivizing travelers to reduce carbon emissions.

Filecoin Green Team Lead Dr. Alan Ransil has recently published two articles highlighting some of the most important use-cases for Web3 in sustainability.
