Filecoin Green at COP27

🌍 Each year, the United Nations hosts the UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP, in order to bring together key figures in the fight against climate change. This year, there was a strong presence of Web3 companies including, Filecoin Green, Hedera, ConsenSys, GainForest, and Thallo, discussing the intersection of web3 and climate. Filecoin Green partnered with Hedera and Hub Culture to host the Climate Pavilion, a two-week hub for programming related to the climate crisis, big data, and web3. One of the key pieces of programming we participated in was a full-day Regenerative Finance Forum that covered topics relating to carbon markets, making sustainability financing auditable, as well as digitizing and open-sourcing methodologies. The Filecoin Green team also had the exciting opportunity to participate in dialogues at the UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub where we hosted a session on using Web3 to Build the Global Carbon Ledger. Be sure to check out Alan Ransil's talk, slides from the presentation, and the recording of the fantastic panel!Another exciting announcement that came out of COP27 was the launch of the Ethereum Climate Platform (ECP), an effort of web3 companies, including Filecoin Green, and legacy institutions like Gold Standard to redress and counteract the historical carbon footprint of the Ethereum network. The ECP will leverage web3 native technology, infrastructure, funding mechanisms, and governance to support scalable decarbonization projects and to bring innovative, impactful climate solutions to the market. You can find the panel recording here as well as the full press release highlighting the ECP here!

🌱  Storage Providers Going GreenWhy is sustainability valuable for Filecoin Storage Providers? Check out 3 of the reasons why sustainability can make a difference in storage provider operations!1. A sustainable strategy attracts investors

Investors love a sustainable business model and they are choosing those companies with strategies in-place over those without them.

80% of investors surveyed in 2019 across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific believe that companies with strong Environmental, Governance & Social (ESG) practices make better long-term investments (Morgan Stanley)

2. Renewable energy is cheaper

Renewable energy sources are lower cost than fossil fuel-generated electricity. In 2020, renewables were the cheapest source of energy pushing them “far beyond the tipping point of coal” according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). This fact is even more important in the 2023 landscape for Storage Providers as high fossil fuel prices will continue to increase operating costs.

Web2 centralized data storage players like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are shifting more and more of their operations to renewable energy due to the pressure from investors, and demand from customers to be accountable for their contribution to emissions reductions all while additionally benefiting from the energy savings.

3. Consumers are choosing green

You don’t have a business if you don’t have customers, right? Aligning with what they need and want is critical to staying relevant and in business. Customers are choosing businesses that are sustainable.

In a recent IDC study, 70% of organizations researched were interested in their data storage solution being sustainable. That’s a growing figure and supported by a recent McKinsey report which also found that 70% of customers surveyed are even willing to pay to go green.
