💰 Gitcoin Grants

Gitcoin Grants is launching two Filecoin categories as part of the GR8 round starting Wednesday, Dec. 2nd:

Both categories have up to $200k in quadratic Gitcoin CLR matching from Protocol Labs. Vote on your favorite proposals (contributing just 1 DAI can have an impact with quadratic voting), suggest your own idea and review open RFPs for Filecoin! Learn more.

⚡️ Huobi Incubator

Huobi Group, in collaboration with Protocol Labs, announces the launch of the Huobi Filecoin Incubation Center with a $10M USD fund dedicated to supporting the Filecoin ecosystem. The incubation center will focus on three main areas: Incubation, investment, and community development. It will support promising Filecoin developers, promote Filecoin-related academic research, and foster ecosystem development. Both Huobi and Protocol Labs believe that IPFS and Filecoin will be the foundation of the next generation of internet, creating a safer, more equal, and accessible system to distribute and store data - our most valuable asset in the 21st century. ⛓ Wrapped Filecoin Bridging Filecoin to Ethereum

Last week, Anchorage announced the release of Wrapped Filecoin (wFIL) in cooperation with Tokensoft and investment firm CMS Holdings. Wrapped Filecoin can be accessed now on decentralized exchange Uniswap, and Anchorage and Tokensoft plan to add cross-chain capabilities to additional native tokens in the coming months. Learn more. This week, Wrapped Filecoin (WFIL) launched its Mainnet. WFIL was one of the leading projects that emerged from HackFS: A virtual hackathon by ETHGlobal and Protocol Labs that challenged 130+ teams to “Build the foundation for the decentralized web”. The team then went on to win best Protocol Bridge at the Gitcoin Apollo Hackathon and is now part of the Filecoin Launchpad Accelerator. Wrapped Filecoin (WFIL) is onboarding new merchants and custodians, if you are interested in partnering with them then please reach out at [email protected].Both of these awesome projects bring Filecoin to the Ethereum blockchain, providing liquidity to the nascent Filecoin storage market, while helping DeFi protocols generate returns for users.

☄️ SR2: Slingshot

Slingshot is a community competition that rewards the storage of valuable data onto the Filecoin network. We have recently introduced Phase 2 of Slingshot, where we are looking for teams that are excited to preserve public, open-access datasets on the Filecoin network. So far, three weeks into Phase 2, dozens of teams have successfully made more than 167,000 storage deals for more than 400+ TiB of valuable data stored! To learn more about the competition or how you can get involved, visit the Slingshot website.

🎉 1 EiB Milestone

Fewer than four weeks after mainnet launch, the Filecoin network celebrated a major milestone. The global community of Filecoin miners dedicated 1 exbibyte (EiB) of decentralized storage capacity to the Filecoin network. To provide some context to the announcement, here are some examples of what 1 EiB is equivalent to:

  • Enough storage to store 290M 1080p movies

  • 4,500 Wikipedias

  • 685,000 years of continuous video calls

  • 19 copies of the entire Internet Archive

To learn more about what this milestone means for the Filecoin network and community,

➕ Filecoin Plus

Filecoin Plus (#fil-plus) has officially launched! For storage miners, you will receive 10x adjusted storage power if you store data from verified clients. This also means miners may have up to 10x higher chances to earn block rewards by storing and proving real datasets from verified clients. As we are working on onboarding more verified clients to the network, miners are welcomed to advertise your service in this ticket. To make your operation most profitable, miners can set up the deal filter configuration to be only accepting deal proposals with VerifiedDeal":true. In addition, you can set up a different price ask for verified deals than regular deals by passing in --verified-priceoption when doing lotus-miner storage-deals set-ask. As this is a relatively new feature, feedback and requests in the form of Github issues on how Lotus can make this user experience better for you are more than welcome!

🌉 DeFi Bridge

We're excited to announce that the DeFi Bridge has launched today! Visit http://bridge.codefi.network to convert native Filecoin (FIL) to renFIL on #Ethereum and back again! Thanks to the amazing teams at Ren and Consensys Codefi for making this possible! The DeFiBridge allows FIL holders to get exposure to the growing DeFi financial system on Ethereum. There's over $2 BILLION in BTC tokenized on Ethereum, and Filecoin will follow a similar trend, enabling new dapps at the intersection of web3 storage and DeFi. Using the bridge, FIL miners can borrow and convert renFIL to native FIL to run more Storage Miners. FIL holders can earn a return on their holdings by converting to renFIL and depositing into a lending protocol like Aave. To get started, check out the tutorial video.

🎮 Filecoin Features: Slashing

Filecoin’s combination of cryptographic and economic mechanisms are designed to align participants’ incentives with the goals and mission of the network. With block reward and deal payment as the main incentive drivers, slashing is the main form of mitigating bad behavior when participants deviate from the promises they made to the network.

Slashing uses game theory and decision science to help solve one of the most important challenges for a decentralized storage network like Filecoin. In the absence of centralized control, Filecoin needs a built-in way to ensure the integrity of the network and align the incentives of its participants. Slashing helps achieve this by fining miners who seek to maximize their own personal gain at the expense of the broader Filecoin ecosystem. Slashing ensures that, for any miner participating in Filecoin, the most rational choice is always to act in good faith to uphold the network. Learn how slashing works.

💻 ProtoSchool

Study up on Filecoin basics! ProtoSchool’s Verifying Storage on Filecoin tutorial offers a beginner-friendly, code-free look at Filecoin’s proof system, exploring how Proof of Replication (PoRep), Proof of Storage (PoSt), and zkSNARKs make it possible to trust peers in an incentivized, decentralized storage system. This tutorial is the cornerstone of ProtoSchool’s Filecoin course, which also covers core dweb concepts like content addressing and cryptographic hashing.
